Understanding Squad Lists

Why do we check Player Registrations and Team Sheets?

Player registration and the exchange/checking of squad information before matches are not unnecessary administration. They are an important part of running safe, fair and properly governed grassroots football.

The principle is very simple:

We should know who is playing, and both teams should be satisfied that every player taking part is entitled to do so.

There are several reasons why this matters:

  1. Player Eligibility – Players must be correctly registered and eligible to represent the team for which they are playing.
  2. Player Identification – Registration photographs allow teams to confirm that the player taking part is the player who has actually been registered.
  3. Age Verification – Youth football is organised by age group. Registration helps ensure that players are participating within the appropriate age and playing-format rules.
  4. Fairness – Registration prevents teams bringing in unregistered or otherwise ineligible players for individual matches and ensures every club competes under the same rules.
  5. Safeguarding – The registration process establishes a recognised relationship between the player, their parent/carer, the club, the League and The FA.
  6. Discipline – If a caution, dismissal or other incident occurs, it is important that the correct player can be identified and that an accurate record exists.
  7. Match Records – A squad list shows who is registered and eligible to represent the team.
  8. Resolving Disputes – Completing the checks before kick-off gives both teams the opportunity to raise a concern before a player participates rather than trying to establish what happened several days later.
  9. Insurance and Club Protection – Affiliated clubs and teams are required to hold appropriate insurance. Player registration may be relevant to the operation of that cover and to any subsequent claim. Clubs should therefore never knowingly allow an unregistered or ineligible player to participate.
  10. Protecting Grassroots Football – Ultimately, these checks protect the players, managers, clubs and the League. They provide transparency and confidence that every fixture is being played fairly and in accordance with the competition rules.

The process should never be confrontational.

Checking a squad list is not an accusation that another team is cheating. It should simply be a normal part of the pre-match routine, just like checking the pitch, goals, match ball or players' equipment.

For the FDYFL, we want this to become a simple habit:

Introduce yourselves. Show/check the squad information. Resolve any questions before kick-off. Then let the children play football.

Clubs Portal

Digital Squad Lists

The FA Club Portal is The FA’s online system for clubs to manage their teams, players and registrations. Club officials can use it to view squad information, check player registration status, access player photographs and manage key team administration linked to FA systems. For FDYFL purposes, this is the system clubs should use to access the official Digital Squad List.
