We would like to inform you about an important change to the Laws of the Game for the 2025/26 season regarding goalkeeper possession time.
A new 8-second rule has been introduced, effective from the start of this season.
Please note that this rule only applies to Youth football played in the 9v9 and 11v11 formats, which typically affect Under-11 age groups and above.
5v5 and 7v7 formats are not included and remain unaffected.
Key Points of the New Rule
If a goalkeeper holds the ball in their hands for longer than eight seconds, the opposition will be awarded a corner kick.
The countdown begins once the goalkeeper has full control of the ball and is not being challenged by an opponent.
Referees will visibly count down the final five seconds with their hand to give goalkeepers a clear warning and help prevent infringements.
If opponents pressure or obstruct the goalkeeper during the countdown, the referee will stop the count and award an indirect free kick to the goalkeeper’s team.
This change is designed to reduce time-wasting and keep the game flowing more effectively.
We ask all clubs, coaches, and goalkeepers to familiarise themselves with this new law to avoid unnecessary confusion during the season.
